Sailor at sea for Christmas

Hemsworth sailor Daniel White will be conducting counter piracy patrols in the Indian Ocean as his family enjoy their Christmas dinner.

The former Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy student is a weapon engineering technician with the Royal Navy.

Daniel, who has been in the navy for three years, is currently on board HMS Westminster and his role involves helping with the maintenance of the ship’s radar and sensor systems and fixing radar defects, ensuring that the ship can continue with its patrols and boarding operations.

He is also part of the ship’s company, which organises morale-boosting activities such as wholeship quiz nights.

Daniel, who is due back in February, said: “My current job on board is to assist with maintaining the ship’s complex radar systems, it is one that I love as it is challenging and rewarding at the same time. There’s never a boring day I can assure you of that - there’s always something to do, either fixing defects or tweaking of the equipment to get the optimal performance from it.

“Being away from home is hard, especially at times like Christmas and the New Year, but it’s the thought that we are now over half way through that keeps me going, so I’ll soon be at home with my family and friends.”
