A charity rugby match was held to support the family of a 19-year-old South Elmsall man who died abroad.

Ben Crawford died after being found unconscious in a swimming pool in a private villa in Ibiza last month.

Upton Rugby Club hosted the match between Ben’s former team and a team of other players who turned up to take part in his memory.

Money raised from the match will go towards a fund to help his family, which has amassed more than £21,000 since it was set up.

Meanwhile personal trainer Jack Waldron and members of the TUF Body Transformation team, based in South Kirkby, took part in a charity workout streamed on Facebook Live.

The fundraisers did a total of 2,400 burpees – a squat thrust exercise that involves a press-up and a jump – to raise money for the cause.

The number of burpees for the challenge was the same as the walkable distance in miles from South Elmsall to Ibiza.

A statement issued by Minsthorpe Community College, Ben’s former school, said: “Ben was a lovely young man who touched the lives of all who knew him.”

“He was thoughtful and kind and had a cheeky side that always made others smile. He was also full of fun and had a zest for life- we will never forget the time the year when he dressed up as Wonder Woman for sports day!

“Ben was respectful, he always treated others well and was highly thought of by everyone that met him. He made a huge impact on his local community, many of whom will keenly feel his loss.

“No words are enough to express our sadness at the loss of such a young life, one that was so full of promise and potential.”

Mr Crawford previously had a scholarship at Castleford Tigers. Visit www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/dale-swain to donate to the fund for Ben’s family.
