Youngsters at Ash Grove Primary School, South Elmsall, dressed up as Romans as part of a national Walk to School week.

They were joined by actors from the Royal Armouries and police officers from the South Kirkby NPT. The ‘Horrible histories’ event, organised by Wakefield Council, was aimed at getting children active as well as bringing the past to life. Northfield Infant School, South Kirkby, was taken over by Vikings as part of the same project.

Coun Olivia Rowley, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Walking to school is a good way to get some physical activity to stay fit and healthy.”
