OPENING times at Minsthorpe Swimming Pool may be cut as Wakefield Council starts a review of its leisure services in a bid to cut costs.
As part of its £22 million savings over the coming financial year, council chiefs will review opening hours of all of its sports facilities, including the pool on Ash Grove, South Elmsall.
The council began talks with staff this week and will contact user groups about possible cutbacks.
Coun David Dagger, cabinet member for culture, sport and libraries said: “Providing the best possible leisure services for people in the district is still our priority, however we have to reduce our spending, we simply have no choice.”
More than £100,000 must be cut from the council’s sport and active lifestyle service.
Coun Dagger said: “By looking at the opening hours of some of our facilities we hope that we can keep all our leisure centres open, safeguard jobs and still offer our customers an excellent service.”
New arrangements are planned to be in place from April 1.
The council said it would plan to try and minimise the inconvenience this could potentially cause customers by ensuring that if one facility was closed on a particular day then other nearby leisure centre services would still be available.
