Polling cards were sent to properties in the Lofthouse Gate area of the district instructing people to vote at Lofthouse Gate Working Men's Club at the local elections on May 6.

The council has now said this was a mistake and that voters will instead be diverted to a pop-up polling station located on land opposite the club, on Canal Lane.

Gillian Marshall, the council's returning officer, said: "Unfortunately polling cards and letters for the Lofthouse Gate area of the Stanley and Outwood East ward, identifying Lofthouse Gate Working Men’s Club as the polling station, were sent in error and we apologise for any inconvenience and confusion caused.

"A temporary polling station for the area has now been found and new polling cards are due to be delivered between Saturday, April 10 and Tuesday, April 13.

"Poll cards have been printed in a different colour and have a note on to advise electors that this is a replacement poll card due to the location change.

"Electors are reminded that they do not need to take their poll card to the polling station with them on election day."
