A class of constables being taught road safety in one of the classrooms of the Police University of the North, in the headquarters of the West Riding police in Wakefield, May 5 1936. The photo description says: "The West Riding HQ gained renown as the Scotland Yard of the North but it is not generally known as a training centre for policemen and detectives. Fourteen other forces in addition to West Riding send their recruits here and forces in all parts of the country send experienced men to take the detective's course. The training is practical and even 'murders' are arranged for the students. The budding detectives have to study 'crimes', interview witnesses and make arrests."(Photo by Fox Photos/Hulton Archive/Getty Images) Photo: Getty
