Popular Leeds butchers Malcolm Michaels opens new shop in Wakefield's Ridings shopping centre

A new butchers shop has opened in Wakefield city centre.

Malcolm Michaels Quality Butchers, based in Leeds, has established a new branch in The Ridings, which will be run be Kieran Martin.

The chain is based in Crossgates in Leeds and but was based in the city’s Kirkgate Market for most of its history.

A message posted by the firm on Facebook backing its new Wakefield branch manager said: “Kieran is ready to kick off with this new venture Malcolm Michaels of Wakefield.

“He has played a massive part in the Malcolm Michaels & Gary’s of Pontefract Family Butchers for more than 10 years.

“We hope you will support him as you always have our other shops on this new journey in 2024.

“You can expect the same high quality meat and fabulous service.

“We’re genuinely grateful for all the amazing people we have met over these 30 years and the loyalty and support you have shown our team.

“Here’s to the next generation and keeping traditional butchering going."

The butchers has been trading since 1993 and has tens of thousands of followers on Facebook.

Notable former employees of the butchers include YouTube Rate My Takeaway star Danny Malin, who lives in Wakefield.

In 2021 Mr Malin said that it was his ‘family’ at Malcolm Michaels butchers that got him through an tough time in his life.

The addition of the butcher’s shop to the Ridings ties in with the centre’s plans for 2024 as huge refurbishment gets underway.

The scheme includes a new tattoo shop, a toy store and children’s boutique, and an indoor park.
