Parking-charge changes may still come into force at the district’s parks and leisure facilities, Wakefield Council has confirmed, after announcing that additional charges will not be imposed in the city or town centres.

Plans were in place to charge for evenings, Sunday and bank holidays at all council-run car parks and on-street bays.

But following a backlash from residents, motorists and business owners, the council announced it was shelving the idea.

However, there has been no decision made yet on limiting free parking to three hours at Thornes Park, Minsthorpe Leisure Centre, Normanton Leisure Centre and Library, and Pontefract Pool.

There could also be an introduction of parking charges at Anglers Country Park, which is currently free, at the same rate as Pugneys.
