Council bosses have deferred a meeting to decide whether to grant planning permission for four new retail developments in Glass Houghton.

Wakefield Council was hoping the proposals, which also include a new stadium for Castleford Tigers, would be discussed at a meeting of the planning and highways committee on Friday, February 6.

But Coun Denise Jeffery, cabinet member for regeneration, said Lateral Property Group, the company behind the proposed £135m Five Towns Park development had carried out further research, which council officers needed to assess.

Coun Jeffery said: “The developers behind the Five Towns Park development have done some work on shopping trends in Wakefield and the officers need to look at that.

“These applications are important to the area so we need to make sure we get it right.

“We’re now looking like holding the meeting on February 19.”

Other applications to be discussed at the meeting include Sainsbury’s plans to turn the B&Q store into a supermarket, a new Aldi off Park Road and an extension to Asda, on Leeds Road.
