Mayor of Wakefield dies

The Mayor of Wakefield, coun Brian Holmes, died on Monday.

Coun Holmes, who celebrated his 75th birthday last Friday, had been due to visit pupils at Ryhill J&I School today (Tuesday) and Havercroft Academy on Thursday. He had been mayor since May. Coun Holmes, who spent Monday night at a school governor’s meeting, leaves behind wife Janet - who is also a Wakefield councillor - his son Darren and grandchildren.

Deputy mayor Laurie Harrison, councillor for South Kirkby and Moorthorpe, will take on mayoral duties until a new mayor is elected on November 13. October’s council meeting has been cancelled as a mark of respect.

Coun Peter Box, Wakefield Council leader, said: “Brian was a much respected friend and colleague who was doing an excellent job both as mayor and also representing the people of Horbury and South Ossett.
