A MAN who left his back garden littered with rubbish has been made to pay more than £500.
Tarek Burkenshaw, of Mill Lane, South Kirkby, was sent a letter by Wakefield Council in March this year asking him to clear up the bottles and other waste which covered his back garden.
He did not take any action so a fine was issued by the council the following month but it was not paid.
The local authority then took the case to court.
He should have appeared before Pontefract Magistrates’ Court on Friday but did not attend.
The case went ahead in his absence and he was fined £250, made to pay £250 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
Carol English, representing Wakefield Council, said it was imperative that once a fine had been issued the resident must clear any litter, waste or any other refuse from the area they are living.
Mrs English said the litter was ‘detrimental to the local community’.
