Joe ‘thrilled’ as grandson makes debut
Devoted Hemsworth grandad Joe Stones said he was “thrilled to bits” when his grandson John made his full England debut.
John, 19, whose family are from Hemsworth, came on as a second half substitute in England’s 3-0 victory against Peru at Wembley on Friday.
The Everton defender still visits his grandad, Joe, at this home on Clifton Street.
Mr Stones, 84, said: “I was absolutely thrilled to bits. I am very happy about it.
“I watched it with a close friend of mine and we had a drink to toast John on Saturday morning.
“He is so down to earth about everything and he really deserves it.”
John is currently in Miami with the rest of the squad preparing for the World Cup finals in Brazil, which begin on Thursday, June 12.
He will find out if he has made manager Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad after the final friendly on Saturday.
