Hemsworth MW closed the gap on the top six in the Premier Division of the Toolstation NCE League when they came back from Pickering Town with three points on Tuesday night.

A goal in each half from Nick Guest and another outstanding defensive effort clinched a 2-0 success for Wayne Benn’s men over opponents in sixth place.

Wells had to settle for a point from their league game last Saturday, but are still handily placed just a point off the top six.

Despite being reduced to nine men Hemsworth looked set to collect all three points from their home game with Athersley Recreation last Saturday, but were pegged back in the last 10 minutes to draw 1-1.

They looked in trouble initially as goalkeeper Sam Leigh was sent-off on 12 minutes for handling the ball outside his area.

But they had an able deputy in Chris Snaith on the bench to come on and with their 10 men went ahead on 24 minutes when Guest dinked the ball over the Athersley keeper after latching onto a good through ball from Brice Tiani.

Snaith came to the rescue with a superb save as he tipped Danny Cawley’s free-kick onto the bar while the visitors’ keeper also had to tip over a Rich Collier effort.

Eleven minutes into the second half Hemsworth found themselves reduced to nine men as Lee Swift was sent-off for a second bookable offence, yet they still seemed on course to keep a fourth successive clean sheet after defending well again only for Jack Briscoe to pop up with an 80th minute equaliser.

Wells were in winning form last Wednesday as Billy Law bagged a hat-trick in their 4-0 win at Albion Sports.

Two good first half finishes set up the victory and Law completed his treble on the hour after burying a fine ball from centre-back Harry Viggars.

Guest sealed the win late on when he won a one-on-one with Albion’s goalkeeper.

This Saturday Hemsworth are at home to an AFC Mansfield team who have also made a solid start to the season in the Premier. Kick-off at the MDC Stadium is 3pm.

Hemsworth, meanwhile, will be looking to make history and progress further in the Buildbase FA Vase on Saturday, November 12 when they have been drawn away to Dunstan UTS, of the Northern League. Victory in the north east would take Wells into the third round of the competition for the first time in their history after they also reached round two last year.

Hemsworth MW are staging a sportsman’s dinner on Friday, November 25 when guest speaker will be Liverpool and Denmark legend Jan Molby.

Venue is Hemsworth Miners Welfare’s ‘Pitclub’, on Wentworth Terrace, Fitzwilliam with doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start and a smart casual dress code.

The event will consist of a speech from the former top level football star plus a raffle, auction and stand-up bingo.

Tickets are £25, including a two-course meal, and are available from manager Wayne Benn or any committee member.
