Ghost hunters to be given access to town's most haunted property

Gatekeepers Paranormal are to spend two days at 30 East Drive (pictured), the property which is said to be home to the Black Monk of Pontefract.

The house, which has stood empty for several years, has even been the subject of a 2012 movie When the Lights Went Out about a family who say they were tormented by spirits in 1960s.

The investigative group, which does not take payment for its work, will be taking the latest ghost-detecting equipment to make contact with the other side.

Rob Pyke, who will lead the hunt, said: “We have a smorgasbord of equipment to use.

“We love 30 East Drive, I have been five times and every time we go we always get something.

“I can’t wait.”

The group will be at the property on Monday and Tuesday next week, staying overnight on both.

Legend has it that the Black Monk of Pontefract was hanged in the town during Henry VIII’s reign for raping and murdering a young girl.

A family moved into the house in 1966 and strange goings-on began to take place, including lights being turned on and off, pictures slashed, objects levitated and heavy breathing sounds were heard.

There were also sightings of a mysterious black-robed figure, thought to be the monk.

Despite numerous exorcisms, the ghost is said to remain at the house.
