A trio of ex-soldiers are planning a marathon trek to raise cash for the Royal British Legion’s (RBL) poppy appeal.

Jason Downing, South Elmsall RBL branch chairman, Scott Sherwood, vice-chairman and Gareth Mitchell, will be walking 84.5 miles along Hadrian’s Wall next month.

The Walking for Poppies challenge – which aims to raise more than £2,000 – will be officially launched this weekend at the RBL branch’s World War One centenary event.

Mr Downing said: “We’re three ex-soldiers who want to give something back to those who have been less fortunate than us.”

The centenary event takes place at the United Services Club on Chapel Lane and will include a family fun day with entertainment including Vera Lynn and George Formby trib ute acts. The event starts at noon on Saturday July 19.

The Walking for Poppies challenge takes place from August 2 to 4 - 100 years since the start of the Great War on August 4, 1914.
