European trip success for brass band

A SOUTH Elmsall band took their talents overseas as they performed at the Diamond Jubilee World Music Festival in Holland.

Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band made their way to Kerkrade, Holland, to play in the exiting musical showcase.

The 32-piece band made its first visit to the former Dutch mining area in 1949 and returned to give further performances in 1950 and 1952. The band made a lasting impression and were invited back this year to join in the fortnight of celebrations.

Chairman Ray Sykes said it was an honour to be invited to play.

He said: “We had a fantastic time and felt it was such a privilege to be there with so many other great bands. It was magnificent.”

Three of the original bandsmen, David Reed, Alec Garbutt and Eber Lloyd, along with the Mayor and Mayoress of South Elmsall, Coun Peter Jordan and Miss Lynne Mansell attended the event. The band are now busy rehearsing for the National Championships at the Royal Albert Hall on October 15.
