Youngsters from Kinsley Primary in Hemsworth celebrated St George’s Day with a guided walk to school from the patron saint of England himself.

A freelance actor visited the children at the school on Wakefield Road to teach them about St George and how he became a saint after slaying a dragon.

Wendy Freer, senior administrator, said: “We celebrate other cultures in school and thought we really need to celebrate our own.

“Many of the children thought the English flag was for the England football team and not for the patron saint of the county - a lot of them didn’t even know we had a patron saint.”
