South Elmsall murder trial

Ian Mark Smith, 22, of Boycott Way, South Elmsall, died from head injuries after being attacked on Barnsley Road on February 19.

Jordan Chopping, 18, told a jury at Leeds Crown Court today (Tuesday) that he had been out drinking in South Elmsall that evening and ended up at the Mega Love take-away on Barnsley Road.

He recalled seeing Mr Smith with another man who were “squaring up” to each other.

He said: “They were arguing and Ian headbutted the man. I don’t know what it was about. Then Ian hit him again with his arm into the Mega Love window.”

Then he described two vans pulling up and a group of men getting out of the vans and chasing Mr Smith towards Sainsbury’s car park.

Mr Chopping walked away with his friend Joshua Covell but returned to the scene to see what was happening.

He said: “Four or five people were beating him to death. He wasn’t fighting back, he was just getting beaten in the path.”

He said the men were kicking Mr Smith in his legs, ribs and stomach.

John Dean Richardson, 44, of Wakefield Road, Fitzwilliam, Neil Brown, 29, and Bradley Jake Parkin, 22, both of Mallard Mews, South Elmsall, and Liam Mark Ackroyd, 22, of Bell Lane, Ackworth, all deny murder and violent disorder.

John Simon Richardson, 23, of Kinsley House Crescent, Fitzwilliam, pleaded guilty to murder on Thursday.

The trial continues.
