South Elmsall councillor Michelle Collins is joining the fight against dementia by taking part in the Leeds Memory Walk this weekend.
She and her husband Gary care for Coun Collins’ 84-year-old grandad Derek Sharman, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease two years ago.
Coun Collins, who represents South Elmsall and South Kirkby on Wakefield Council, is taking part in the 10k walk with family members including her mum, sister and husband and her grandad will also be going along to share the day with them.
Coun Collins, 26, said: “Since grandad’s diagnosis our life has changed dramatically.
“My husband and I took the decision to move in with grandad to give him the 24-hour care he needs.
“We help grandad with everything. We get up at night and put him back to bed when he gets up thinking he has been left alone, but not everyone is lucky enough to have family to help them.
“I am taking part in the memory walk as a personal challenge, but also to raise money to fund vital services for people like my grandad.”
The walk starts at 11am on Saturday, September 6 at Roundhay Park.
