Hemsworth MP Jon Trickett visited Ackworth Parish Council to show his support for Fair Pay Fortnight.

The parish council is backing the TUC campaign which aims to raise awareness of Britain’s cost of living crisis.

The parish council has decided to pay its staff the living wage - currently £7.65 per hour.

Mr Trickett said:”I know from talking to my constituents that many people are struggling to cover the basic cost of living.

“Low paid insecure jobs are a big part of their concerns, people in my constituency are still being paid below the national average.

“I am proud to have local councils in my area which are now paying their employees a real living wage.”

Recently-released figures show nearly five million people in the UK are paid below the living wage.

Coun Sarah Balfour, chairwoman of Ackworth Parish Council, said: “Ackworth Parish Council is proud to be one of a small number of town and parish councils which are paying the living wage to their employees.

“The living wage is necessary because the minimum wage is too low and we hope other councils will soon follow suit.”
