St Joseph’s Catholic Primary, Moorthorpe, will convert to an academy school next month.

The Barnsley Road school will become part of the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust on Saturday, February 1. The trust, which was established by the Diocese of Leeds, is a partnership between several Catholic academies in the Wakefield district.

The decision means the school will become a publicly funded independent academy, free from local authority control. The school will be able to set its own pay and conditions for staff, decide how to deliver its curriculum and be able to change the length of its term times and school days.

Wakefield Council’s cabinet approved the transfer of assets, staff, pensions and service agreements at a meeting on Tuesday.

The school was taken out of special measures in December, after Ofsted inspectors found it had improved since being deemed ‘inadequate’ almost two years ago.
