Castleford Tigers boss Daryl Powell is looking forward to taking his team back to Newcastle on Saturday after enjoying the Magic Weekend experience there last year.

It will be the second successive year that rugby league’s showpiece event will be held at St James’s Park and tickets have been selling well with Cas fans and supporters of other clubs.

“I thought it was good at Newcastle last year, a really good atmosphere,” said Powell.

“There was a buzz about it and obviously if you can get a good performance it makes it even better.

“I think the Magic Weekend is working.

“It brings everybody together, which makes it a special day in rugby league so you’d think they would want to keep it.

“I haven’t got anything against it, it’s a good couple of days and with all the games together in a fledgling area in the country it’s always good for rugby league when you can do that.

“But I think we’ll have to be careful with it looking at the amount of injuries. It’s one of the options to reduce the amount of fixtures, bearing in mind Easter. But who knows what they will come up with moving forward.”

Powell reckons players enjoy playing at Magic Weekend as it offers something a little different to their normal routine.

He added: “It’s not a different focus for players, but it’s not a ground you play on every year so the Magic Weekend can give you a little bit of a different feel and freshen things up maybe.

“It is something a little bit different to the usual routine. There’s fans of different clubs there so it’s got a bit more of a gala feel about it, which is interesting.”
