THE CANDIDATES for a Hemsworth Town Council by-election have been announced.
Darren Campbell, representing the Labour party, and independents Chris Tibbetts and Raymond Warren will go up against each other for a seat on the council’s west ward.
The election will take place on Thursday, February 9.
Both Mr Tibbetts and Mr Warren have previously sat on the council but were voted off in last year’s town and parish elections in May.
The by-election is being held to replace former councillor Ian Womersley, who was kicked off the council for failing to attend a meeting in six months.
Mr Womersley, who was voted onto the council in May 2011, had been unable to attend as he was caring for his sick wife and, later, grieving for her following her death.
Mr Womersley also resigned from his position of Wakefield Council, which he had held since May 2008, following Mrs Womersley’s death.
He would have been up for election this year.
As he resigned within six months of the date of the next district council election, his seat will be filled on May 3.
