A COUNCIL leader was brutally attacked after an argument about a pedestrian crossing.
Police are hunting for a man who repeatedly punched Coun Laurie Harrison - who has served on South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council for almost 50 years.
The attack happened as Coun Harrison - who also serves on Wakefield Council - was in the garden of his home on Barnsley Road, South Kirkby.
He was approached by a cyclist who accused him of tampering with the sound device installed in the pedestrian crossing which bleeps to alert people when it is safe to cross.
The man got off his bike, went into Coun Harrison’s garden and knocked him to the ground before punching him several times.
Coun Harrison, who is the chairman of the district council’s Community Safety Overview and Scrutiny Committee, told the man he had not touched the pedestrian crossing.
He said: “I was about to show him how to use the bleeper system on the machine - which he accused me of turning off because of the noise - but he attacked me.
“I was pushed down and then he kept punching me. It is outrageous, and to be attacked in your own garden is dreadful. I don’t want him to get away with it.”
The assault was witnessed by a motorist waiting at the lights opposite Coun Harrison’s house.
The man, who did not wish to be named, told the Express: “I was just sat waiting for the lights to change at the crossing near his house when I saw this man arguing with Coun Harrison in his garden.
“The man punched him in the face and then he fell to the ground. I turned around to go and help but by that time the guy was cycling away on a push bike. No-one deserves to be treated like that.”
The attack happened on Friday, August 3 at 3.15pm.
The suspect was aged between 30 to 40 and was riding a silver push bike.
He was wearing a white baseball cap and blue sports top.
Sgt Lee Carlson said: “We are watching CCTV footage and have done house to house enquires. We are confident we will trace him.”
Anyone with information should call Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
