An outdoor group that works with children in South Kirkby and a teenager who has supported younger students have been recognised at an awards ceremony.

Josh Salmons, from South Kirkby, picked up the Young Achiever accolade while the Outdoor Action for Kids Forest School took home the Working with Young People and Environmental Champion trophies at Wakefield and District Housing’s Love Where You Live awards.

The finalists had already received recognition in their local area heats representing the east, central and west areas of the district. The final winners – which were decided through a public vote – were announced at a ceremony at the Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield.

The event, which was sponsored by Sodexo, raised almost £300 for the Prince of Wales Hospice and Wakefield Hospice.

Kevin Dodd, WDH’s chief executive, said: “There is a great deal of hard work going on across the district to make our communities better places to live, and local people are at the heart of this.

“This year’s WDH Love Where You Live Awards have been even more successful than last year, and we are hoping for even greater things in 2014 as more local heroes receive the recognition they deserve.”
