A much-loved fun family event will be returning to Ackworth for the first time in more than 30 years.
The Ackworth Pram Race will see fun runners steering their buggies and pushchairs through the village streets on Sunday, August 30.
The once-annual event has been brought back to life by local residents who want to raise funds for Pontefract’s Prince of Wales Hospice. The race, which was traditionally held at Easter, was popular in the 1970s, with spectators lining the streets to watch around 30 two-man teams compete.
Organisers now need marshals, first aiders, sponsors, prizes and raffle prizes, as well as competitors for the twomile course, which will also include four pit stops in the village pubs.
Alan Martin, committee member, said: “The village has grown over the years - yet our facilities have shrunk and there is nothing for anybody here anymore. The pram race used to be really well supported so we wanted to bring it back for local residents.”
