Under 19s trio Ash Robson, Will Maher and Tom Holmes are impressing head coach Daryl Powell with the way they are handling the step up to the senior ranks at Castleford Tigers.

All three have been training with the first team squad this year and were in the Tigers team that beat Catalans Dragons 36-28 last Sunday.

Holmes came on as a late substitute to make his Super League debut while Robson and Maher were making their home debut in the competition.

“I’m delighted with the progress of the young players who were involved,” said Powell.

“Obviously Tom didn’t have too long, he only had four or five minutes, but it gives him a taste of it, which is always good.

“Ash has handled himself well so far and there were a couple of lessons for him in the game.

“Will was great. I thought his battle with Springer was good, two young props going head to head. They had a real tussle with each other.

“The young kids have been great and they have been a big plus for us.

“Ryan Sheridan’s done a great job with the 19s and they have all acquitted themselves superbly well all the way through the year and certainly in the time they’ve had in the first team.

“There’s Brandon Westerman as well who’s playing well. He is still pretty young, he’s only 17, and it will be a little bit of time before he gets a look in.

“But the three who played on Sunday are the stand-outs at the minute. They have all shown they can handle the step up, which is great.”
