Featherstone Rovers made a successful start under new head coach John Bastian by beating Hunslet Hawks 26-0 in their opening pre-season game on New Year’s Day.

Rovers gave an outstanding defensive display in dreadful conditions at Big Fellas Stadium in the annual Gareth Swift Memorial Trophy game.

They led 20-0 at half-time after totally dominating the first-half territorially in a match watched by 785 spectators.

New scrum-half signing Gareth Moore put them on their way when he scored a fourth minute try and added the first of his three goals.

New skipper Tim Spears went over and Greg Worthington also crossed before he limped off.

Will Sharp grabbed Featherstone’s fourth try on the stroke of half-time and Andy Ellis darted in early in the second period to complete the soring.
