Upton’s Pennine League Division 1 title hopes took a big hit when they suffered a 32-18 defeat in an ill-tempered match at Brighouse Rangers.
The Quarry Lane side were leading 18-12 before a mass brawl involving players and spectators unfolded.
The visitors did not recover, with Brighouse storming to victory after both sides saw a man sent off.
The hosts enjoyed the better start and scored two early tries to lead 12-0.
Fran Welsh scored under the posts and Steve Beal converted to get Upton into the game and the visitors drew level just after the resumption through Craig Shippley. Beal converted.
Paul Thompson broke to put Welsh in for his second try as Upton took the lead for the first time before the fighting broke out.
The Quarry Lane side did not recover, with Brighouse running in a number of tries to secure what turned out to be a flattering victory for fifth-placed Rangers.
Welsh, Beal, Scott Boughen and Matt Cowling impressed for Upton, who next host division leaders Methley on Saturday, May 25.
