Featherstone Rovers climbed to the top of the Kingstone Press Championship with tonight’s 30-16 win over Halifax at the Shay.

Rovers, aiming to lift the League Leaders’ Shield for a fourth successive season, climbed above Sheffield Eagles by completing a double over Halifax with their 10th win in their last 11 league matches.

Featherstone, who welcomed back on-loan centre Vince Mellars from a hamstring injury, were in charge from the third minute when Tim Spears scored the first of their five tries.

They led 16-4 at half-time with further touchdowns from Andy Kain and Tommy Saxton.

Any hopes Halifax had of getting back in the game quickly disappeared in the second-half when Kain grabbed his second score.

James Lockwood also crossed and skipper Liam Finn kicked his fifth goal to put the visitors 30-4 ahead.

Halifax’s fightback came too late to earn them a bonus point.

Halifax’s try scorers were Ryan Fieldhouse (two) and Wayne Rettie. Steve Tyrer kicked two goals.
