SNOW and freezing weather conditions caused havoc to the weekend’s sporting fixture list around the area.
Junior and senior football, rugby league and rugby union teams were amongst those that saw matches postponed owing to the current cold snap.
Frickley Athletic were due to welcome FC United of Manchester to Westfield Lane in the Evo-Stik Premier League on Saturday but the match was called off 24 hours before kick-off due to a snow-covered pitch.
The match was due to be one of the South Elmsall club’s most lucrative of the season with United traditionally bringing a bumper support to bolster the attendance but it will now be rearranged, with a midweek slot the most likely outcome.
Hemsworth MW also saw their Northern Counties East League Division 1 match at Rossington Main fall victim of the weather.
The match has already been rearranged for Tuesday, February 12.
There was no rugby league action in the Pennine League, meaning a free weekend for Kinsley Raiders, Ryhill Hammers and Upton.
Hemsworth RUFC saw their trip to Aireborough called off in Yorkshire Division 3 and are due to return to action at home against Baildon this Saturday (kick-off 2.15pm), weather permitting.
All Wakefield Saturday and Sunday League matches were postponed, and there was no junior rugby league or football action.
Clubs will be hoping to see an improvement in the weather conditions this weekend to avoid a fixture pile-up towards the end of their respective campaigns.
