Featherstone Rovers slipped to their first defeat this season when they lost 26-18 to bogey team Sheffield Eagles.

Rovers failed to beat the Eagles in three meetings last season and they were unable to do so again at Don Valley Stadium on Thursday evening.

Sheffield repeated last year’s Championship Grand Final victory over Rovers by ending their six-match winning run.

Michael Knowles put Sheffield ahead with a fourth minute try but Featherstone hit back to lead 12-4 with touchdowns from Tom Hodson (13 minutes) and Anthony England (32), both converted by skipper Liam Finn, who stretched his Rovers scoring run to 53 consecutive matches.

The Eagles cut the gap on the stroke of half-time with Tom Armstrong’s try and they regained the lead in the 51st minute when Menzie Yere scored and Dominic Brambani added his second goal.

The game swung back Featherstone’s way when Finn goaled his own try to edge Rovers 18-16 in front.

But Sheffield struck a decisive blow seven minutes from time when Scott Turnerr went over and Brambani converted to give the hosts a 22-18 advantage.

They sealed victory with Yere’s second try in the final minute.
