Rovers set to field strong side against amateurs

Featherstone Rovers are set to field a strong team in Sunday’s Tetley’s Challenge Cup third round tie against amateurs Thatto Heath at Big Fellas Stadium.

“A few weeks ago I was thinking of rotating people but at the moment I think we need a consistent team selection so it will be a pretty strong side,” said Rovers coach Daryl Powell (pictured).

Kyle Briggs (knee) looks certain to be missing after he was injured in Friday’s defeat at York while Anthony England and Ian Hardman are both doubtful after picking up knocks in Monday’s 38-18 win against Swinton.

“Kyle will need a scan and he could be out for a few weeks,” added Powell who will not take anything for granted against Thatto.

The St Helens-based amateurs reached the third round by beating Wigan St Patrick’s.

“Amateur opponents will be really committed and pretty physical. You’ve got to douse the fire and build a game for yourselves,” said the Rovers boss.

“Amateurs do things slightly differently to the professional teams you play against and you need to deliver a focused performance from an attacking point of view.

“You don’t know much about them so defensively you’ve got to be ready for anything.”

Powell believes Rovers need to regain confidence after defeats at York and Sheffield.

“I think our confidence was rattled by the Sheffield defeat,” he added.

“Obviously, we didn’t play against Workington the following week and I think it’s probably just festered on us a little bit.

“I think we went into the York game believing we would just be too good for them. York came up with an outstanding performance from their perspective and we came up with one that was about 40 per cent of our potential and as a result of that we weren’t good enough to win.”
