THERE were mixed fortunes for South Kirkby CC over the weekend as the club contested a league and cup double-header.
The Millers Walk men were looking to secure the Pontefract League Division 2 title on Saturday and win the Yorkshire Council Play-Offs Supplementary Cup on Sunday.
They managed one out of two, with league glory being followed by a relatively comprehensive defeat against Central Yorkshire League side Ossett in the cup.
It was celebration time on Saturday as Kirkby beat Askern Welfare by 58 runs to cap-off promotion back to the top flight with league glory.
Jake Rimmington top-scored with the bat for the hosts with 46 as the league leaders made 163.
It was with the ball that Kirkby won it, however. Dave Rollin (4-31) and Chris Beaumont (4-33) did the damage to help skittle Askern out for just 105 in reply.
Kirkby’s win, coupled with Hooton Pagnell’s failure to secure all ten points from their match, was enough for Kirkby to be crowned champions.
Things could have got better just 24 hours later when Kirkby went up against Ossett in the Yorkshire Council Play-Offs.
But Ossett were emphatic winners, hitting 247-4 to leave Kirkby with it all to do in reply.
They fell short, finishing on 175-9 as Ossett lifted the trophy.
