NOSTELL CC is hoping 2012 is the start of a blossoming new era at Garmil Lane.

The club’s first team has already made a name for itself in the Pontefract Cricket League thanks to a swift rise from admission into Division 3 in 2009 to become a solid Division 1 side last season.

Now they’re looking to expand their success with the return of a second team for 2012. And the club also has one eye on reforming a junior-set-up in the not-too-distant future.

“It’s been six or seven years since we last had a second team here,” said first team vice captain James Rowett.

“We struggled for players before but last season we had a big squad for the first team and we had players missing out.

“Those missing out wanted to play cricket so we decided to form a second team. They have contacts who fancied playing too.

“With just a first-team you can’t really move forward as a club despite how well we’ve done.

“Hopefully the return of a second team will allow us to do that and hopefully we can attract more players down to the club.”

With the new season just over a month away Nostell are looking for players of any cricketing ability to boost their squad.

They’ve retained the majority of last year’s first-team but any new players have the chance to stake their claim for a starting role, they won’t just be there to make up the numbers.

Players are invited to indoor nets, which take place at Hemsworth Sports Centre on Sunday from 12 noon-2pm.

Outdoor training will begin at Nostell’s Garmil Lane ground on Thursday night’s from the start of April.

Steve Reynolds will captain the first team this year with Rowett as vice captain.

Simon Roberts has been named second team captain with Phil Brown as vice captain.

Nostell 2nds will start life in Division 8 of the Pontefract League and they’ll welcome Normanton to Garmil Lane on Saturday, April 21.

The first team make the trip to Rothwell in Division 1.

“The aim is to finish higher than we did last year,” said Rowett.

“We had a tough start but things came together and we finished sixth. Hopefully this year we can get around the third or fourth spots.”

Nostell are looking for scorers for the first and second team and also for sponsorship. For more information contact James Rowett on 07879 999229.
