The last of Pontefract’s three Sunday fixtures this season - the Flying Fillies Family Day - will take place this weekend.
The race day takes its name after the feature race on the day and the richest race to be run at Pontefract in 2015.
With £50,000 on offer, the EBF Highfield Farm Flying Fillies’ Stakes has a rich history with some very classy fillies on the role of honour.
The 2014 prize went the way of Qatar Racing’s Valonia, trained by Henry Candy who got the better of the hugely popular Spinatrix in a pulsating finish.
The race sponsors, Highfield Farm, have had a number of superb horses through their paddocks in recent years including group one winners Mayson and Garswood.
There’ll be some top class horses on show off the track too as favourites Mr Wolf and Mister McGoldrick, stalwarts of the northern racing circuit in recent years, will also be parading before racing starts.
As has become the custom on Sundays at Pontefract, there’s a lot going on for the kids in the picnic enclosure.
With kid’s rides, a circus, face painting and free sweets, activity books and racecards, there’s plenty to keep the little ones occupied.
Eagle eyed kids need to keep a look out for the lucky golden horseshoe - there’s a hamper of sweets to be won for the first person to find it.
There are also free pony rides while racegoers can take a look behind the scenes with a minibus trip down to the start.
Running from the picnic enclosure entrance gates for the start of chosen races, it gives racegoers the chance to watch the calm before the equine superstars explode in to action.
Before racing starts, there’ll be a mum’s race over the final half furlong, with the chance to win £250 worth of vouchers for Oulton Hall Spa.
A varied and exciting card opens with the EBF Trevor Woods Memorial maiden which has thrown up a couple of speedy youngsters in the last two runnings. See the Sun and Grandads World have both been regulars in some hot sprint handicaps this season.
The Stayers Championship will be back in action too and Micky Hammond’s Tuscan Gold will hopefully be back on the track to consolidate his current lead. With lots of popular stayers right on his hooves, he’ll need to bring his A-game if he’s to take the championship.
There are some special family day tickets also available when booked in advance.
Two adults and their children can take advantage of a special price of just £22.
There’s also a barbecue package for £23.
Anyone wanting to take advantage of any of the special advance packages should visit the course website at www.pontefract-races.co.uk or telephone 01977 781307.
Racing gets underway at 2.15pm and the gates open at 11.30am.
