Welfare defeat Parkgate in friendly opener
Hemsworth MW 2 Parkgate 1 HEMSWORTH MW kicked-off their pre-season friendly fixtures with a 2-1 victory against Parkgate.
Damion Liddle and Vinny Dawson bagged the first-half goals for the Northern Counbties East League side at Fitzwilliam Stadium.
The hosts began brightly and broke the deadlock after just two minutes through a cool Liddle finish.
The Hemsworth marksman could have doubled his tally as the hosts upped the pressure on their Rotherham-based visitors.
It took Parkgate a while to get into their stride and when they did they found Hemsworth goalkeeper Adam Tasker in top form.
And MW doubled their lead on 21 minutes when Liddle's pace got him free of the Parkgate defence before he provided Dawson with a simple finish.
The visitors did hit back just a minute later when a shot deflected off a number of MW players before hitting Wayne Harratt and deflecting into the back of the net.
But, with a host of changes being made by both sides on the resumption, neither could find the back of the net in the second half.
Hemsworth return to the Fitzwilliam Stadium on Saturday when they host Barnsley Academy, kick-off 2pm.
Admission is priced 2 for adults and 1 concessions.
