Wakefield District Sports Awards recognises the best local talent

THE ninth Wakefield District Sports Awards ceremony held at Castleford Civic Centre last night, Monday, proved to be a fantastic celebration of the very best local sporting talent.

No fewer than 13 awards were up for grabs at the ceremony hosted by BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration while Wakefield Wildcats' head coach John Kear and skipper Jason Demetriou were the guests of honour at the prestigious event.

Following her historic appearance in the World Athletics Championships 200m final, Wakefield Harriers' sprinter Emily Freeman achieved more success by winning the Sportswoman of the Year trophy.

Freeman, 28, set a new personal best and became the first British woman to qualify for a World Championship 200m final for 26 years with a superb performance in Berlin last month.

Joining Freeman on the award-winners' list was Sharlston Rovers' Lee Maskill who scooped the Sportsman of the Year trophy.

Maskill's displays on the rugby league pitch led to his selection as captain of the BARLA Great Britain Lions against Samoa in the third test of the Unison Tour of the South Pacific played in June.

Castleford High School's Kelsey Morgan was presented with the Junior Female Sportsperson of the year award following her string of successes as a rugby league half-back.

Kelsey was selected for the Yorkshire U16s team before leading her school team to many honours including a hat-trick of National Cups.

And her achievements caught the eye of the national selectors who have picked the 16-year-old for the England Women's U18s rugby league squad.

Netherton hockey goalkeeper Simon Hujwan has also experienced the glory of representing his country and the 15-year-old Wakefield Hockey Club player received the Junior Male Sportsperson of the Year trophy.

Simon played for England U16s in a four-team international against Scotland, Wales and Ireland and the youngster has now set his sights on future Olympic glory.

Other awards presented included the Manager/Coach of the Year, Disabled Performance of the Year and the new Professional Sports Personality of the Year.
