SOUTH Elmsall speedster Dave Hemingway is gearing up for what he hopes will be an improved season in the Red Dragon MR2 Racing series in 2012.

The 44-year-old has high aims for his third year competing in the series when it starts at Brands Hatch on the weekend of March 24-25.

Hemingway started out as a rally driver and only recently tried his hand on the racing track with Red Dragon Race and Track Club.

It’s resulted in a steady improvement in finishes over the last two years but the daring driver still admits he has plenty to improve upon.

“Rallying and racing are two completely different things,” he said.

“I need to be more like a racing driver than a rally driver.

“I often look at Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button in Formula 1 and think that Button is like a racing driver and Hamilton is more like a rally driver.

“I also need a more reliable car and that’s something I’m working on at the moment so hopefully it’ll mean I have a better season in 2012.”

Hemingway, who started rallying in 1988, is currently hard at work with his team in building a Toyota MR2 fit to compete this season.

He’ll get the chance to try it out at a test event at Brands Hatch, the circuit for the first race of the season, on Wednesday February 29.

The MR2 Series lasts eight rounds and one round takes place per month at circuits such as Snetterton, Caslte Combe, Silverstone, Mallory Park and Cadwell Park.

Up to 38 drivers can compete in one round.

Hemingway, part of Wakefield Racing Club, may still be a relative newcomer to the series but he still has the confidence in his abilities to enjoy a good year in the driving seat.

“I’m looking to win the series,” he commented. “It’s going to be tough but I’ve been improving, especially towards the end of last season when I enjoyed strong finishes and podium finishes.

“So there’s no reason why I can’t do even better this year.”
