Ryhill club on-course to help budding sailors

WEST Riding Sailing Club will be helping budding sailors take to the waters this spring and summer when they hold RYA-authorised training courses for beginners.

The club, based at Wintersett Reservoir in Ryhill, will hold six courses, held between April and June, to introduce sailing to absolute beginners and get them involved with the club.

“We’ve helped over 80 people through the Level 1 courses so far and we’d love to see a big number down for this year’s courses,” said club secretary John Gledhill.

“They’re open to young people trying for the first time to OAPs who are wanting to start out in sailing.”

The Ryhill club became a RYA-authorised training centre in 2009 and now has numerous coaches able to teach RYA courses.

Those taking places on the courses, which start on Saturday, April 21, will also become a member of the club - something Gledhill believes is crucial in their development as sailors.

“People often go to train at centres but then never return afterwards,” he said.

“Here you can return after completion of the courses because you’re still a club member.

“We can provide boats for you to sail in on the waters and you can compete in our race series and get race training further down the line, and there’s also the social aspect of the club which is great to be a part of.”

Equipment such as free use of club boats, wetsuits and buoyancy aids is provided for the courses. The only thing required for the courses is a pair of trainers that you don’t mind getting wet.

The six dates for the courses will all be on Saturday and run on April 21, April 28, May 12, May 19, June 9, June 16.

Course for Level 2 and Level 3 will also be available following completion of Level 1.
