Rovers boss pleased with young players

FEATHERSTONE Rovers coach Daryl Powell was happy with the way the club’s young stars shaped up in Sunday’s match at Castleford.

Rovers drafted in a handful of youngsters because they were without Tom Hodson (hamstring), Tommy Saxton (back), Ben Hellewell (collarbone), Michael Haley (broken foot), Sam Smeaton (knee) and Tim Spears (shoulder).

“We had two young wingers in Dave Scott and Kyran Johnson and also people like Liam Mackay, Jack Ormondroyd, Jack Bussey and Danny Holmes. Danny hadn’t played for us before,” said Powell (pictured).

“Obviously, you want to win the game if you can but really that was of secondary importance to having, at times, six really inexperienced players on the field. They will grow massively from that experience and that is more important than the result.

“I was delighted we had an opportunity to do ourselves justice against Castleford and also give a great experience to some young players.

“We had Scott and Johnson starting the game against a Super League team and I thought they handled themselves pretty well.

“It was young Bussey’s first game this year and I thought he was exceptional.

“He’s so strong and he caused Castleford a lot of trouble with his footwork and his strength when he went on at right side back row which is a position he hasn’t played before.”
