Rose out to make Frickley bloom
NEW Frickley Athletic manager Karl Rose is aiming to bring a change in mentality to Westfield Lane next season.
The former Barnsley striker was named as Peter Rinkcavage’s successor at the South Elmsall club last week.
He cut his managerial teeth in three years at Goole AFC, taking over with the club stuck to the bottom of Evo-Stik League Division 1 South and helping them avoid relegation before achieving a mid-table finish.
His success at the Victoria Pleasure Grounds came on a limited budget and he’s hoping to repeat that with the Blues.
“I need to change the philosophy and the mindset of the club,” said Rose.
“I’m under no illusions that a lot of hard work is going to have to be put in to achieve that.
“But the club finished fourth from bottom last season and we need to improve on that, we need to get the club used to finishing in positions higher up the league table.”
Rose has already started work on his squad for next season and says eight players have agreed to join the club.
But they can’t be confirmed until player registration opens for next season and the Blues boss is fully aware players could be tempted elsewhere by money.
“I’ve been on the phone to about 40 players already,” he said.
“I’ve got eight players who should definitely be signing for us and plenty more who’ve said they’d like to come, but they’re only a gentleman’s agreement with them.
“Amounts of £20 or £30 more than what we can offer players can turn heads at this level so the deals aren’t done until they’re signed on the dotted line.
“We’ve got one of the smallest budgets in the league and we know teams such as North Ferriby United can offer a lot more than we can.”
Although keen to get the best players possible, Rose says the limited budget doesn’t concern him too much.
“I don’t want players to come here for the money,” he commented.
“I want them to come here because they want to play here, because they’ll enjoy playing here.”
Rose will have to find a new club captain after Stuart Ludlam left for Evo-Stik Premier Division rivals Worksop Town, and Rose also expects defender Mark Gray to leave for North Ferriby.
The former Scarborough player, who lives in Darfield, has fond memories of watching Frickley with his dad when they were playing in the Football Conference in the 1980s.
He said: “I wouldn’t say I supported them as a lifelong fan, it was one of those things where you’re looking to watch some football on a Saturday so I often went to watch Frickley with my dad.”
That level of football is a way off, but Rose is certainly planning for improvements next term.
Off-the-field work has already started but the Blues will be back on the training pitch on Tuesday, July 3 when pre-season training starts.
