Own goal double condemns Blues to Grimsby Town defeat

Frickley Athletic 0 Grimsby Town 3 THE Blues scored two own goals as they opened their pre-season campaign with a 3-0 defeat at home against Grimsby Town.

Josh Fuller's strike gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead at the break before two carbon copy own goals in the second half condemned Billy Heath's men to defeat at a rain-soaked Tech5 Stadium.

Lee Booth was the first to put the ball into his own net just after the hour mark to double the visitors' lead when he turned a Bradley Wood cross beyond the Blues stopper.

And a second followed soon after in similar fashion from Charles Fisher as Neil Woods' Town side, backed by a decent following in South Elmsall, made it two wins from as many friendly fixtures.

Frickley did threaten Grimsby stopper Kenny Arthur a number of times, especially in the first-half when Chris Davies flashed a long-range effort just wide of goal.

Former Sheffield Wednesday man Lee Peacock broke the offside trap to put Fuller in for the Mariners' first on 34 minutes.

Chances came at both ends in the second half as Fuller went on a superb run before firing an effort just wide.

The Blues had their best chance of the game just minutes later when Arthur had to be alert to deny new signing Andy Lee from point blank range.

But Grimsby's second all-but sealed their win before a third, and a second own goal rubbed salt in the wounds.
