Not-so-lucky Sevens for Hammers and Upton

RYHILL Hammers and Upton ARLFC both suffered semi-final woe in the Wakefield ARL Pennine Trophies Sevens.

The duo both progressed from the group stage of the competition, held at Wakefield ARLFC, Sandal, but fell one step short of a final appearance.

Both were drawn in Pool A and Upton enjoyed three wins from four matches to finish second behind the hosts.

A 16-10 victory against City was followed by a 32-10 win against Eastmoor A, 12-8 win against Sharlston Rovers and a close-fought 18-16 defeat against Ryhill.

Hammers' success against their local rivals was one of two wins that saw them through to the Shield competition, designed for teams finishing third and fourth in their group.

The other was a 30-8 win against Eastmoor A, while defeats came against Sharlston and City.

Upton's second-place finish pitted them against Eastmoor in the semi-final but they fell to a 34-8 defeat against the eventual winners.

Ryhill were drawn against Kettlethorpe in the shield semi-final and they too fell to a 22-4 defeat against the eventual winners.
