Hemsworth MW target prolonged run in FA Vase

HEMSWORTH MW boss Wayne Benn hopes to guide his side to a prolonged run in the FA Vase after seeing Welfare bow out of the FA Cup at Salford City at the weekend.

The MDC Sports Stadium club lost 5-1 at their higher-division opponents in Saturday’s Preliminary Round clash - a game which Benn didn’t believe his side did themselves justice.

Next on the agenda is the FA Vase on Saturday with Welfare hosting near neighbours Nostell MW, who play in the Premier Division of the Northern Counties East League (NCEL), in the First Qualifying Round (kick-off 3pm).

“There shouldn’t be much between the two teams, they’re a division higher but they’ve not had the best of starts so it’s a winnable game,” said Benn.

“It’s a good competition to be in and it’s good to have a home tie.

“We’ve got a home tie against AFC Blackpool in the next round if we progress too and that’s another winnable game and something to aim for.

“We need to get through Saturday’s game with Nostell first though. It’s a local derby which will add a bit of spice to things.

“We were never going to win the FA Cup but the FA Vase is a competition we’d like to get deep into.”

Benn’s side will at least go into their FA Vase encounter on the back of a confidence-boosting league win on Monday against Shirebrook Town.

Town had led after 27 minutes but Welfare hit back just three minutes later through Heeley.

Andrew Hart’s 48th-minute penalty fired the hosts ahead before Heeley added his second and Jack Wakefield sealed the points for Hemsworth, despite a late strike by the visitors.

Welfare follow Saturday’s Vase match with a home league game against Yorkshire Amateurs on Tuesday (7.45pm).
