Dagnell at the double to guide ten-man Barnsley through in Capital One Cup

CHRIS Dagnell scored an extra-time brace to guide ten-man Barnsley through to the second round of the Capital One Cup with a thrilling 4-3 win at Rochdale on Saturday.

Dagnell’s double spared the blushes of goalkeeper Ben Alnwick, who was sent-off in the 90th minute for aiming a headbutt at Ray Putterill and gifted Jason Kennedy the leveller from the penalty spot to send the game to extra-time.

The Reds had led 2-1 before that incident with John Stones, scoring his first Reds goal, and Craig Davies replying to Andrew Tutte’s opener for the hosts.

Rochdale couldn’t take the momentum into the extra 30 minutes, however, with Dagnell netting twice to guide manager Keith Hill to victory over his former club, despite another Kennedy penalty.

The second round draw takes place on Wednesday night.

Rochdale: Lillis, Cavanagh, Edwards, Kennedy, Tutte, Donnelly (Putterill 75), Grimes (Curran 84), Edwards, McIntyre, Adebola (Crainey 84), Pearson. Subs: Smith, Bennett, Rafferty, Barry-Murphy.

Barnsley: Alnwick, Stones (Stones 85), Foster, McNulty, Wiseman, Mellis, Perkins, Done, O’Brien (Dagnall 18), Etuhu (Cywka 70), Davies. Subs: Lidakevicius, Golbourne, Dawson, Digby.
