Featherstone’s highly-rated young hooker Sam Day has signed a new two-year contract.
Wakefield-born Day, has been a regular in the Rovers under 19s Academy team this season and had attracted interest from Super League clubs.
Ryan Sheridan (pictured), Featherstone’s interim head coach, said: “Sam is a quality hooker with an eye for a try and excellent prospect. He was rewarded in pre-season by joining the first team squad on our trip to Spain which shows how highly regarded he is at Featherstone Rovers. It is great to a player developing through our system and I am certain he has a rosy future in the game.”
Day said: “I am delighted to sign a new contract with Rovers. I am really enjoying my time at Featherstone and feel my game is really improving at the club. My ambition is to play Super League rugby league and I feel that I can fulfil my ambitions by remaining at the Big Fellas Stadium. There was interest from Super League clubs but I feel best placed here to develop my game.”
Rovers chief executive Craig Poskitt said: “Our ethos at Featherstone is to produce home grown players who can slot in to the first team. We have a long tradition of developing quality players and we are delighted to have fought off Super League interest in Sam. I would urge fans to keep a close eye on our youth system. We have invested in a crop of youngsters this year and will do the same in 2014 with an increased investment.”
