HEMSWORTH made it four wins from five home matches in Yorkshire Division 3 with a convincing 35-17 victory over Rotherham Phoenix.
The Moxon Fields men were eager to bounce back from their defeat at Thornesians in their last outing and did so with a five-try triumph.
The last time the clubs had met was at the end of the 2009-10 campaign when Rotherham won the league clash to clinch the Yorkshire Division 4 title before Hemsworth ran out winners in the semi-final of the South Yorkshire Cup just four days later.
Both squads have seen big changes since then and Hemsworth welcomed back Andy Kenyon after a long-term injury while also giving a debut to winger Josh Taylor, who became the 36th player to pull on a first-team shirt already this season.
Hemsworth made a superb start with the forwards and backs combining to allow Gav Sykes and Charlie Briscoe to run in early tries after Phoenix had kicked a second-minute penalty. Both tries were converted by Joe Thompson.
The hosts kept the pressure on their visitors and the result was another the half-hour mark from Jake Thomson. The conversion was successful to give Carl Wroe’s side a 21-3 lead going into half-time.
Paul Lawton suffered an injury for Hemsworth and Rob Simmons came on in his place but the hosts continued to call the tune on the resumption.
A Gary Dyas break was stopped by a big tackle and Rob Hooker was sent to the sin-bin for retaliation.
The 14 men of Hemsworth continued to play well, however, and it was no surprise when Mark Tepper went over for the next score, again converted by Thompson.
Phoenix clawed their way back into contention with a brace of tries but Hemsworth made sure of their victory when man of the match Dean Joburns scored a brilliant individual try.
Victory moved Hemsworth up to seventh in the table ahead of what’s set to be their toughest test of the season at league leaders Old Rishworthians in Halifax.
In contrast to their good home form, Hemsworth have won just one of their six away matches.
