HEMSWORTH six-a-side team Lawton’s Legends missed out on the chance of playing at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium after crashing out at the quarter-final stages of the Powerleague Lucozade 5’s.
The team, who play in the Hemsworth Champion Soccer League, were one step away from the national finals when they travelled to the Powerleague pitches at the Trafford Centre in Manchester at the weekend.
Legends won all their group games but bowed out at the last-eight stage when they fell to defeat on penalties against Liverpool-based Pool United.
Legends beat Goole Raiders, Mancunian Raiders, Whiston Wildcats, Red Recks and The A Team in their group games to progress to the next round.
But Pool held their nerve in the quarter-final penalty shoot-out to progress and sent Legends home.
Scott Folletti finished group top-scorer with a superb 14 goals in five games, while player of the tournament for the Hemsworth side was Carl Wilson, who scored seven goals from defence.
Legends will hope fro better fortunes in next year’s tournament, with the final being held at Wembley.
Qualifiers will start in February 2012 and heats will take place in Leeds and Sheffield.
They’ll now turn their attentions to representing the Hemsworth Champion Soccer League at the national six-a-side finals in Sheffield on Saturday, June 18.
The competition has been won by Manchester side ‘Dream Team’ for the last three seasons and Legends will be looking to knock them off their perch this time around.
