HEMSWORTH RUFC opened their Yorkshire Division Four campaign with a close-fought 12-7 victory at newly-promoted Wetherby on Saturday.
The Moxon Fields men had to battle back from 7-0 down to claim maximum points in their season opener without ever getting into top gear.
The hosts were crowned Yorkshire Division Five champions last season and continued their momentum into the new season.
In a scrappy opening, which didn’t allow the skillful Hemsworth backs much time with the ball, the hosts crossed out wide in the corner and converted to take a 7-0 lead.
Hemsworth’s cause wasn’t helped by the fact they played 20 minutes with 14 men after both Rob Hooker and then Charlie Briscoe were sin-binned.
But they restricted any further scores from the hosts and started to boss the game when they returned to a full complement of players on the resumption.
Matt Hall and Jake Thomson linked well to put Dean Joburns in for a try ten minutes into the second half before Dale Harrison powered his way over the line, taking three men with him, to give the visitors the lead.
Thomson added the extras with the boot and the scoring stopped there to get Hemsworth off the mark at the first time of asking.
